Knights of Badassdom (2014)

knights-of-badassdomHow do you get over a break up? In January 2014, Joe got over his by being too busy trying to survive to care.

Directing this 86 minute comedy/fantasy/horror is Joe Lynch.

Trying to stay in game is: Ryan Kwanten as Joe, Steve Zahn as Eric, Peter Dinklage as Hung, Summer Glau as Gwen, Drett Gipson as Gunther, Jimmi Simpson as Ronnie Kwok and Margarita Levieva as Beth.

Eric and Hung think it would be a great idea for Joe to come to the Live Action Role Play (LARP) event. Especially since Joe just got dumped by his girlfriend Beth. What better way to take your mind off stuff than hanging out with your friends and defending the kingdom, right? Unfortunately, what was supposed to be a fun role playing event soon turns into a bloody nightmare.

As I sat down, I was wondering what I was getting into with Knights of Badassdom. I’m picturing something in the medieval times of course because of the whole knights thing. Really it was the Badassdom part that made me want to watch it. Well, as it turns out, it was even better than I thought it could be.

Kevin Dreyfuss and Matt Wall came up with a good screenplay. The story was fun to watch and it held my attention from start to finish. Between a good script and the delivery from the cast, I thought the playthrough was really entertaining.

The music that Bear McCreary did for the flick caught my attention, which is something that doesn’t always happen in movies. The last song towards the end of the film, “Your Heart Sucks My Soul…” freaking awesome (if you like metal)!

The cast was really good, but I have a whole new respect for Dinklage. I already knew Dinklage was a talented actor but his character was so funny and it was a side of him that I had never seen before. Zahn was also good, but I’ve always thought he did really good in comedies. Simpson never really does anything different with his characters from film to film, but some how it works for him. No matter what the role is he just fits right in, and this one was no different. As for Kwanten, yeah he was good and I liked his character.

With the work that Lisa Caryl-Vukas did on the costume design and then Spectral Motion’s special effects, everything looked cool. I especially dug on the monster, it’s a mix of cool and cheesy, which flows great with the rest of the film.

Summary : Yeah this movie carries a horror tag, but it's nothing scary... at all. There's a demon and there are some bloody deaths, but none of this will bring a scare. Really, it's more of a fun one to watch that happens to have blood and body parts scattered about. So, if you're into LARPing or are an ex D&D player you'll get a kick out of it. Or maybe you're a Game Of Thrones fan, in which case, come laugh at Lannister. Now, you don't have to be into any of that stuff to sit back and still get a laugh out of this one... bonus! So, since it's worth the time - grab it a give it a spin.

It's rated R for violence, language and gore.
