Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead (2014)

dead-snow-red-vs-deadAfter you escape an zombie nightmare, what would make you turn around and face them again? In February 2014, Martin realized the fight maybe be over, but the war had just begun.

Directing this 100 minute action/comedy/horror is Tommy Wirkola.

Preparing for a showdown in this flick is: Vegar Hoel as Martin, Jocelyn DeBoer as Monica, Ingrid Haas as Blake, Stig Frode Henriksen as Glenn Kenneth, Martin Starr as Daniel, Orjan Gamst as Standartenfuhrer (Oberst) Herzog, Kristoffer Joner as Sidekick Zombie and Charlotte Frogner as Hanna.

After being the only survivor of the Nazi zombies that attacked Martin and his friends, it looks like things still aren’t over yet. Martin has paid a heavy price for surviving the zombie nightmare that took place on the mountains of Norway. He lost all of his friends, his girlfriend and even his right arm. Unfortunately, during Martin’s narrow escape from the head zombie Herzog, he ends up in a horrible car accident. After waking up in the hospital, the authorities want answers for the bodies found up on the mountain and Martin’s answer of zombies isn’t setting well with them. So Martin makes his escape from the hospital so he can figure out what to do. That’s when Martin realizes the nightmare is far from over. Apparently, something has brought Herzog and his undead army down from the mountain. Now, Martin has to figure out why the army is on the move, and how to stop them once and for all. Problem is, Herzog’s army is growing bigger with every town they go through. So, Martin may need to dig up an army of his own if he wants to take on Herzog.

Tommy Wirkola and Stig Frode Henikesen are at it again with this sequel to their Norwegian film Dead Snow (2009). Where as the first film was subtitled because all of the film was in Norwegian, this time the language is a mix of Norwegian and English. So be prepared, this one is a subtitled flick.

Writers Stig Frode Henriksen, Vegar Hoel and Tommy Wirkola put together a great script for this Norwegian film that not only picked up right where the first one left off but made it so everything flow smoothly together from one film to the other. This one is a little bit more comical than the first film, but nothing extreme that hurts the film by making it into a cheesy comedy. The writers did a killer job in creating the right balance of horror with a side of comedy. I also liked that the writers came up with a storyline that wasn’t just a repeat of the first film, as so many other films have fallen victim to when trying to do a sequel. Instead, they got creative and found something that made sense (as much as you can in a zombie flick) and was entertaining.

The playthrough was awesome and it held my attention the entire time. It keeps a good solid pace from beginning to end. Another thing that helps with the playthrough is the good job done by the cast. Hoel is a really strong actor and did great carrying the weight of the lead role.

Between the special effects done by Spectal Motion, the visual effects by Troll VFX and Linn Henriksen’s costume design everything looks killer. Then throw in Matthew Weston’s cinematography work and you get plenty of eye candy to keep your eyes glued to the screen.

Summary : This one is definitely worth caching. Yeah, this flick does a few things a little different than you may be use to in a zombie film, but that's one of the things that makes it so good.

It's rated R for violence and language.
