Justice League: Throne of Atlantis (2015)

justice-league-throne-of-atlantisHave you ever felt like you didn’t know where you belonged? In January 2015, Arthur knew he was different from everyone else, but he never would have guessed that difference would lead him to finding out where he came from.

Directing this 72 minute animation/action is Ethan Spaulding.

Voicing our heroes and villains is: Matt Lanter as Aquaman/Arthur Curry, Jason O’Mara as Batman, Jerry O’Connell as Superman, Rosario Dawson as Wonder Woman, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Christopher Gorham as The Flash, Sean Astin as Shazam, Shemar Moore as Cyborg, Steve Blum as Computer Voice, Sirena Irwin as Queen Atlanna, Sumalee Montano as Mera, Harry Lennix as Black Manta and Sam Witwer as Ocean Master/Orm.

After news about a submarine being attacked in the Atlantic finds it’s way back to the Justice League headquarters, Cyborg decides to go check it out. What he finds is a ripped up submarine, all the crew dead and some missing missiles. What Cyborg can’t figure out is, what could have done something like this to a submarine? Meanwhile, a man named Arthur Curry, who is trying to get over the loss of his father, is unknowingly being followed. Both of these situations have something in common, a man named Orm. Orm is an Atlantian who wants war with the landers and will do whatever he can to make it happen. Now the Justice League must stop Orm before war breaks out, and along the way Arthur might find out what all this has to do with him.

You know, I remember a time when the Justice League was kid friendly. People got punched, things exploded, jokes were made and before the credits rolled the villain was stopped. Nowadays however, the League is being geared more for the older crowd than it is for the little kiddies. Yeah, people still get punched, things still explode, but now we’re getting foul language, a lot more blood and people getting decapitated. Don’t get me wrong, I’m seriously digging the new DC animated films, but I miss the times when they were all ages friendly.

I have to say, even though I’m not an Aquaman fan, I liked the story that writers Heath Corson and Geoff Johns came up with. Not only was it a nice intro story for Aquaman, but it was also a sequel to the Justice League: War (2014) flick. It’s kind of cool seeing them continuing to build off the title instead of throwing out independent story lines each time.

The playthrough was good and really entertaining. It keeps a solid pace the entire time and has plenty of action going on. With the solid job Phillip Bourassa did with the character design, everything looks good and flows smoothly.

The voice cast does a good job, and it was nice to see the return of O’Mara, Moore, Gorham, Astin and Blum to the lineup. Fillion, who has played Green Lantern 4 times now, is a great addition to the cast and makes a killer Lantern.

Summary : Justice fans will get a kick out of this one, so make some time and catch it.

It's rated PG-13 for violence and language.
